Chelsea get transfer green light for next move after £74m breakthrough

Chelsea could now be one step closer to signing long-term target Alejandro Garnacho with Manchester United sanctioning a move for a huge transfer.

The Argentine has been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford with Ruben Amorim also not having Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia or Antony in his plans.

Rashford has already joined Barcelona on a season-long loan and though the deal includes a buy-option, United will want guaranteed fees coming in for the other four players.

Having spent over £120 million to sign Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolves and Brentford, respectively, there is a need to raise funds. That is also the case at Stamford Bridge but it's fair to say that Chelsea are selling much better currently.

Joao Felix, Djorde Petrovic, Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga and now Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have all departed permanently with over £100mobtained as a result. Christopher Nkunku, Armando Broja, Lesley Ugochukwu, Tyrique George and potentially even Nicolas Jackson could all follow.

Man United were tentatively linked to Jackson but instead opted for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Newcastle United put forward a hefty bid in an attempt to sign him as the likely replacement for wantaway star Alexander Isak amid links to Liverpool.

The Magpies saw their £74.2m (€85m) proposal accepted but United matched that offer, albeit with a slightly different add-ons structure and thus became the frontrunners for his signature.

Discussions with Leipzig are now ongoing and a final agreement is getting closer, as per The Athletic, which will see United's spending hit roughly £200m.

To balance their books and potentially fund further additions, selling is set to become the next priority.

With concrete interest in Sancho and Antony minimal, an exit for Garnacho seems to be the most immediate. Chelsea are still in the process of finalising a deal to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig but advanced talks for Garnacho could either follow or be completed alongside that.

Considering the fees spent on Anthony Elanga, Mohammed Kudus, Jamie Gittens and Madueke this summer, United have every right to demand £50m.

If Chelsea proceed with a move for Garnacho, they could have essentially funded part of the Sesko deal and that switch being ratified gives the Blues a green light to sign the United winger.
