A shocking gift deed has raised eyebrows in Maharashtra: a three-acre land plot, worth nearly Rs 150 crore, was reportedly gifted by members of the royal Salar Jung family from Hyderabad to a driver working for Shiv Sena MP Sandipanrao Bhumre. This unusual transfer has now sparked a full investigation.
What happened?
Jawed Rasul Shaikh, who has worked as a driver for MP Bhumre and his MLA son Vilas for 13 years, suddenly became the legal owner of prime land on Jalna Road in Dawoodpura, Sambhajinagar. According to the gift deed (called hibanama), the land was given by Mir Mazhar Ali Khan and six relatives, descendants of the famous Salar Jung family, once prime ministers under the Nizam of Hyderabad.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police is probing how such a valuable piece of land was gifted to someone with no known ties to the family.
What did the driver say?
Jawed told TOI that he had shared a good relationship with the Salar Jung descendants, which is why they gave him the land. He added that he’s cooperating fully with the investigation and has already submitted all documents requested by the police.
Police take on the case
Police Commissioner Pravin Pawar said the probe began after a lawyer from Parbhani filed a complaint. Inspector Sambhaji Pawar from the EOW team said, “We’re reviewing Jawed’s income, tax returns, and possible sources of wealth. He needs to clearly explain why such a valuable gift was given to him.”
The EOW has also sent notices to the Salar Jung family members involved in the deed, but they haven’t responded yet.
Politicians react
Vilas Bhumre, MLA from Paithan, said that while Jawed is their driver, they don’t control his personal decisions. “The police also questioned me, but a hibanama is a legally valid document. If Jawed received land through it, that’s his matter,” he said.
Legal and religious questions raised
Lawyer Mujahid Khan, who filed the complaint, said what caught his eye was that Jawed has no family link to the Salar Jung descendants. He also pointed out that a hibanama is typically valid only between blood relatives. “Jawed and the Hyderabad royals not only belong to different families but also follow different sects of Islam,” Khan added.
Calls to the Salar Jung family members have gone unanswered, adding further mystery to the already strange land gift.
