US President Donald Trump on Tuesday spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer condolences for the victims of a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The call came hours after militants opened fire on a group of tourists in the scenic Baisaran Valley, killing at least 26 people and injuring 20 more.
Trump strongly condemned the attack, calling it “deeply disturbing” and assured Modi of Washington’s full support in India’s fight against terrorism. “The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism. We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
In response, Modi thanked the US President and reaffirmed India’s determination to bring the attackers and their backers to justice. “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice... they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” Modi said in a post on X.

Tourists gunned down in broad daylight
The attack unfolded around 3 pm on Tuesday when armed terrorists descended from the hills of Baisaran valley — a meadow often dubbed ‘mini Switzerland’ for its alpine charm — and began firing indiscriminately at tourists and locals. The area, known for its tranquil beauty, turned into a scene of horror and chaos.
Victims included men, women, and children. Medical teams were quickly mobilised and the injured were evacuated for emergency treatment. In a statement shared on X, the Indian Army's Chinar Corps called it “a cowardly and heart-wrenching act of violence.”

Outpouring of grief and global solidarity
International and domestic reactions poured in swiftly. Trump’s message was echoed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who posted: “The United States stands with India.” The Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in the US State Department added: “Nothing can justify such a heinous act, killing tourists and civilians... We call for perpetrators to be held accountable.”
JD Vance, Trump’s deputy currently on a four-day visit to India, also expressed sympathy. “Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India... Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack,” he wrote.

Modi briefed, Shah chairs security review in Srinagar
In the wake of the attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level security meeting on Tuesday evening in Srinagar. Top officials, including Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha and CM Omar Abdullah, were in attendance. Shah also briefed Prime Minister Modi on the security situation.
A joint search operation was immediately launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Baisaran area of Anantnag district. Security forces are combing the region to track down the attackers, while monitoring activity in nearby valleys.
Locals light candles, condemn violence
The attack triggered spontaneous protests and mourning across Kashmir. Candle marches were held in Sopore, Ganderbal, Handwara, and Bandipora. Residents gathered to honour the lives lost and demand justice. According to Chinar Corps, the marches were a reflection of “the anguish caused to local sentiments.”
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, shared Trump’s call on X:
“President Donald Trump @realDonaldTrump @POTUS called PM @narendramodi and conveyed his deepest condolences at the loss of innocent lives... President Trump strongly condemned the terror attack and expressed full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous attack.”
Tuesday’s attack is one of the deadliest in recent years in Kashmir, and comes amid a fragile security climate in the region. Though violence has declined in some parts, the targeting of civilians, especially tourists, marks a troubling escalation. It has also rattled a region still recovering from past insurgencies and political unrest.
As India mourns, its security agencies remain on high alert. Modi’s message is clear: there will be no leniency, and justice will be swift.
