Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday announced that the government will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on October 31 next year, with two-year nationwide celebrations from 2024 to 2026.

Shah announced on X: "Sardar Patel-ji's enduring legacy as the visionary behind the establishment of one of the world's most robust democracies and his pivotal role in unifying India from Kashmir to Lakshadweep remains indelible. To honour his monumental contributions, the government of India, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, will commemorate his 150th birth anniversary with a two-year-long nationwide celebration from 2024 to 2026. This celebration will serve as a testament to his remarkable achievements and the spirit of unity that he epitomised."

The Modi government has taken several decisions in the past to honour Sardar Patel. Known as the 'Iron Man' of India, the government declared that his birth anniversary shall be observed as National Unity Day every year in 2014.

In 2018, PM Modi inaugurated Patel's 182-metre statue - Statue of Unity - at Kevadia in Gujarat. It is currently the world's tallest statue. In 2019, PM Modi had dedicated government's historic decision to nullify Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir to Patel, saying that his dream of the region's full integration with the Union of India, had been fulfilled.

Sardar Patel, born in Nadiad, Gujarat on October 31, 1885, was a Congress leader and the first home minister of independent India. He is credited with integrating 562 princely states to build the Republic of India.
