Sleep deprivation can push many to grab naps wherever possible, but a simple mistake in how you rest could cause lasting harm, warns Dr. Themistocles Protopsaltis, an expert spinal surgeon at NYU Langone Health. When tossing and turning to fall asleep, Dr. Protopsaltis says the wrong posture can leave your joints and spinal discs in a crooked position. Over time, this misalignment may trigger stiffness, muscle tension, and persistent aches. Speaking to the New York Post, he explained that while many prioritize stretching and weight training, cardiovascular exercise is often neglected—a crucial element for maintaining spine flexibility and overall health.

Keep Your Spine Strong
Regular exercise is key, but maintaining proper posture throughout the day is equally important. Dr. Protopsaltis recommends pulling your shoulders back and keeping your neck neutral several times daily. Gentle stretches for the neck—moving it side to side and up and down—can help reinforce healthy alignment. For those glued to screens, optimizing ergonomics is essential to prevent long-term damage.

Sleep Positions That Protect Your Back
Not all sleeping positions are created equal. Dr. Protopsaltis advises sleeping either on your back or side to maintain the spine’s natural S-shaped curves. Belly sleeping, he warns, can twist the neck unnaturally, causing morning stiffness, muscle spasms, and tension. Adjusting your sleep posture may feel challenging initially, but persistence over a few weeks can help your body adapt naturally.

If neck or back pain persists despite posture corrections, Dr. Protopsaltis recommends immediate remedies such as a warm shower, gentle massage, ice application, or over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. These measures can alleviate discomfort while long-term posture and exercise habits address the root cause.

While naps can provide a quick energy boost, how and where you sleep matters as much as duration. By combining regular exercise, mindful posture, and proper sleep positions, you can protect your spine, reduce morning aches, and support overall well-being.
