Trump wants Elon Musk's brainchild DOGE to probe world's richest man's business empire

Send Push
US President Donald Trump has called for a fresh look at how much taxpayer money goes into Elon Musk’s business empire. He believes cutting these funds could save the government huge sums.

On Tuesday, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE.”

He didn’t stop there. He suggested his Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, should dig deep into the numbers. “Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” Trump wrote.

Musk fights back
Musk didn’t waste time. He fired back on X, writing bluntly: “I am literally saying CUT IT ALL. Now.”

After weeks of silence, the Tesla and SpaceX chief has returned to the political frontline, attacking Trump’s flagship tax and spending plan. Musk warned the bill would drive the “biggest debt increase in history” and labelled it “utterly insane and destructive.”

On Monday, he turned up the heat. He slammed lawmakers for breaking promises to limit spending, saying they “should hang their heads in shame!” Musk went further still: “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he declared.

Rift between old allies
The split is dramatic. Just a few years ago, Musk led DOGE, Trump’s project to slash government waste. He even poured nearly $300 million into Trump’s re-election fight.

Back then, they agreed on cutting costs. Now they trade insults online.

Musk claims the new spending bill wipes out any savings his efficiency push delivered. He’s not done either. He now wants to form a new party to take on what he calls America’s “one-party country”.

He wrote: “Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.” He mocked the system as the “PORKY PIG PARTY!!”

Electric cars in the firing line
Trump also repeated an old complaint. He argued that people should not be forced into buying electric cars. “Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one,” he said on Truth Social.

Big stakes for Republicans
The row could have bigger consequences than angry posts. Some Republicans worry this fight could hurt them at the ballot box in 2026.

Musk has warned: “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

The feud has rattled Tesla investors. The company’s shares plunged by about $150 billion at the peak of the drama, though they have since clawed back some ground.

For now, the White House’s next moves are unclear. Trump wants DOGE to check the books. Musk wants the whole system cut loose.

Neither shows signs of backing down.
