Amal Clooney , the wife of popular Hollywood actor George Clooney and an even more popular international human rights lawyer, recently attended the Cannes Film Festival 2025, being held at the Palais des Festivals from 13-24 May 2025.
The 47-year-old, who is usually spotted alongside her actor husband at red carpet events, strutted into the festival solo this time in an ensemble that not only defied the new rules set by the festival but also the standards set for stunning ensembles by other popular faces.
Amal Clooney at the Cannes Film Festival 2025?
Amal attended the premiere of 'Bono: Stories of Surrender' at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 16th. She rocked a fitted black gown with off-the-shoulder straps, a creation by designer John Galliano during his time at Christian Dior. She paired the gown with Cartier diamond drop earrings and some silver cocktail rings. With her luscious brown locks open, she complemented the attire with a black clutch.
Her appearance on the red carpet was turning heads for another big reason- she defied the new rules set by the festival. In 2025, the Cannes Film Festival banned nudity and voluminous dresses on the red carpet, which included a ban on metre-long trains. "Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted," read the festival's FAQ. However, Amal's gown featured a full-length train, defying the newly laid ban and joining her in a list of celebrities who did the same, such as Halle Berry and Heidi Klum.
Why did Amal Clooney attend Cannes 2025?
While neither Amal nor her husband were a part of the film, the couple's longtime friend and George's frequent collaborator, Brad Pitt, served as a producer on the Apple TV+ documentary centred around the U2 band frontman's life. Clooney could be seen posing with both Bono and The Edge at the premiere.
The film will be a “bold and lyrical visual exploration of Bono’s one-man show,” according to the press release and will be released on May 30th on Apple TV+. While the Grammy winner created the show based on his memoir, 'Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story', the film is a reimagined version of his one-man stage show, 'Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief', which was based on his book.
After the screening, Clooney changed into a gold mini dress adorned with flowers, sequins, and crystals for the after-party. She previously attended the festival alongside her husband in 2016, at the premiere of Money Monster.
