Send Push
In a recent update, the Indian Railways has introduced several special provisions, which include allotting lower berths to senior citizens, women, and people with disabilities. To address the needs of vulnerable passengers, Indian railways has set a dedicated quota of lower berths across different travel classes.

Here are some important things travelers need to know: image
1. In sleeper class, there are six to seven berths per coach, while in Air-Conditioned 3 Tier (3AC), four to five lower berths are earmarked. In Air-Conditioned 2 Tier (2AC) coaches, three to four lower berths are reserved for the passengers. Although this allocation depends on the number of coaches in the train, to maximize accessibility.

2. Senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, and pregnant ladies are automatically allotted lower berths at the time of booking, although these are subject to availability. This ensures that eligible passengers are not inconvenienced during their journey.

3. Indian Railways has made special arrangements for people with disabilities. A reservation quota has been established in all express trains, including premier classes such as Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. The quota includes four berths in Sleeper Class (with at least two lower berths), four berths in 3AC/3E (including two lower berths), and four seats in Reserved Second Sitting (2S) or Air-Conditioned Chair Car (CC).

4. During the journey, if any lower berth is vacant, preference may only be given to women, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.

5. In addition to berth reservations, Indian Railways' continuous effort to enhance the station facilities has been seen. To make the boarding and deboarding procedure easier, provisions of wheelchairs, dedicated assistance counters, and ramp access at major stations are being expanded.

These facilities are provided irrespective of whether the passengers have availed of any fare concessions, making the scheme more universally accessible. These initiatives illustrate Indian Railways' ongoing commitment to a more accessible, safe, and inclusive experience of travel. Through attention to senior citizens, women, and people with disabilities, the Railways seeks to provide train travel with greater dignity and ease for everyone.

Passengers are invited to make use of these facilities and enjoy greater comfort and safety on their journey.
