Mumbai: A case has been registered at Colaba Police Station against a Lieutenant Commander in the Indian Navy for allegedly engaging in a physical relationship with a woman under the false promise of marriage.
The accused, Lieutenant Commander Abhinav Kumar (37), originally from Bihar, was posted in Mumbai between 2022 and 2023. He has been booked by the Colaba Police for allegedly deceiving a woman he was in a relationship with for nearly three years. The two had met on a matrimonial website in 2022, where both had registered in search of marriage partners.
According to police officials, their acquaintance developed into a relationship, and they reportedly became physically intimate at a lodge in the Colaba area. The woman, an engineer from Uttar Pradesh currently residing in Virar, believed their relationship was leading to marriage.
However, in 2025, she was shocked to discover that Abhinav Kumar had married another woman. Following this revelation, she approached Colaba Police Station and filed a complaint on April 2. Based on her statement, a case was registered under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to sexual intercourse obtained through deceit.
Police issued a notice summoning Kumar for inquiry. Officials confirmed that he complied, appeared at the police station, and is cooperating with the investigation.
Kumar is currently posted at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, following his transfer in 2024. Police sources said the accused allegedly promised marriage and subsequently established physical relations with the woman, but later reneged on his promise, leading her to approach the police.
