Friends, you may have noticed many times in your life that whenever you keep your feet and hands in water for a long time, your skin shrinks. This is a common occurrence, but not everyone knows the real reason behind it. Today, we will tell you about the reasons why skin shrinks after prolonged exposure to water:
1. Prolonged exposure to water
When we stay in water for a long time—such as while swimming, bathing, or washing clothes—our skin is constantly in contact with water.
2. Depletion of natural oils
Water gradually washes away the natural oils and sebum present on the surface of our skin. These oils normally protect and maintain the skin's moisture balance.
3. Water absorption
After the sebum is removed, the outer layer of the skin (especially the epidermis) begins to absorb water. This accumulation of water causes the outer layer to swell.
4. Expansion and Contraction
After the skin fills with water, it first expands and then contracts with the flow of water. This contraction causes the skin to appear wrinkled or wrinkled.
5. The Role of Keratin
The skin on our hands and feet contains a protein called keratin, which is highly absorbent. When it absorbs water, it swells and then hardens, causing the skin to appear wrinkled.
