Periods in Sawan: The month of Sawan is considered to be the most special for the worship of Lord Shiva. During this time, lakhs of devotees offer water in temples, observe fasts, and go on pilgrimages. But many times, women are on such religious journeys, and during that time, they get their periods. Now the question arises whether, in such a situation, they should visit the temple to see God or not?
This question was recently asked by a female devotee to the famous saint Premanand Maharaj of Vrindavan. The woman said that when women reach a pilgrimage with so much difficulty, and menstruation starts during the same time, can they have darshan?
What did Premanand Maharaj say?
Premanand Maharaj answered this in very clear and simple words. He said that "one should not be deprived of the darshan of God on such an occasion." He explained that menstruation is a normal process of the female body, about which there should be no feeling of guilt or shame.
He also said that it is not easy to reach the pilgrimage. People reach the temple by spending money and overcoming many difficulties. In such a situation, if there is no darshan, it will become an even bigger sorrow.
What is the right way?
Premanand Maharaj advised that if a woman is at a pilgrimage place in this situation, then she should take a bath, apply sandalwood with Bhagwat Prasad, meditate on God from a distance, and then take darshan. He also said that at such a time, do not participate in any service of the temple and do not touch God. That is, just take darshan with devotion from a distance, and pray in your mind.
Menstruation is not a fault.
Premanand Maharaj said that it is important to remove the wrong beliefs spread in society regarding periods. He said that it is not dirt or sin, but rather a matter of respect for women. He mentioned a religious story in which it is said that when Indradev was accused of Brahmahatya, a part of that fault was distributed in the form of menstruation of women. This means that women saved the world by taking the sin of Tribhuvanpati Indra on themselves.
What needs to be understood?
The gist of this entire discussion is that, along with religious faith, the physical nature of women should also be understood. Premanand Maharaj gave the message to the society that it is wrong to deprive women of worship or consider them inferior due to menstruation.
