Mahadev resides in Kankhal

According to mythology, in the month of Sawan, Lord Shiva comes with his entire family and resides in Kankhal, Haridwar, which is also Shiva's in-laws' house. According to Shiva Purana, once Goddess Sati's father Daksha Prajapati had organized a yagya in Kankhal, Haridwar, in which he did not invite Shiva.

But Sati insisted on going to the yagya at her father's house without being invited. When Sati reached her father's house, her father Daksha Prajapati insulted Shiva, the god of all gods, which Sati could not tolerate and she sacrificed her life in the fire of the yagya. Angered by this, Shiva assumed the form of Veerbhadra and beheaded Daksha.

But on the prayers of the gods, Shiva revived Daksha by putting the head of a goat on him. After this, Daksha apologized to Shiva and took a promise from Bholenath that he would give him a chance to live in his place and serve him every year in the month of Sawan. Since then, it is believed that Shiva resides in the form of Daksheshwar in Kankhal, Haridwar and also controls the entire universe.
