UPI Facial Recognition Payments: Starting October 8th, UPI payments are set to become easier. Entering a PIN for every transaction will no longer be required. Users will be able to approve payments using their face or fingerprint, making payments faster, safer, and smarter.
UPI New Feature: If you use UPI like PhonePe or Paytm for payments, you no longer need to enter your PIN repeatedly. Payments can be made simply by showing your face. Starting October 8th, UPI transactions can be authenticated with your face and fingerprint. The government has completed preparations to launch this new feature. A demo will be shown at the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai. Let's explore what changes this will bring and how you can use the new system.
What is going to change in UPI payments?NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has announced that biometric authentication will now be implemented for UPI payments. This means you will no longer need to enter a PIN or OTP for every transaction. Your Aadhaar-linked biometric data (face and fingerprint) will authorize the payment. The feature will be live for users starting Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
How will UPI's new face payment system work?Under the new feature, when you make a payment using UPI, you'll see the option to "Authenticate via Face/Fingerprint" on your mobile screen. Your Face ID or fingerprint will be verified against the Aadhaar database, meaning payment will only be processed if your biometric data matches. This eliminates the need to enter a PIN, and payments will be approved within seconds using your face or fingerprint, making transactions even faster, more secure, and smarter
How secure will face payment be in UPI?
This entire process will be conducted using data from the UIDAI (Aadhaar system). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently approved 'Alternative Authentication,' following which the NPCI decided to implement it.
UPI: Why was this change necessary?Millions of people use UPI every day, but forgetting your PIN or making typing errors can often cause payment problems. The new biometric authentication feature will speed up payments, reduce fraud, and make transactions easier for senior citizens or less tech-savvy users. This feature will be a game-changer, especially for those who struggle with repeatedly entering their PIN.
Important things for UPI users- Your mobile and bank account should be linked to Aadhaar.
- New Face/Fingerprint authentication option will be available in bank apps.
- If you wish, you can continue the payment through PIN mode also.
