Bargarh: Two persons have been detained by the police in connection with the death of a minor girl, who was rescued with critical burns from a football field at Firingimala village in Odisha’s Bargarh district on Monday.
Sources said a relative of the girl and a local shopkeeper have been detained at the Gaiselet police station for interrogation in connection with the tragic incident, which sparked widespread outrage.
The statements of the family members of the 13-year-old victim have reportedly been recorded by the investigators in the presence of Inspector General of Police Himanshu Lal and a magistrate.
Preliminary findings indicated that a family dispute may have led to the tragic incident.
The minor girl, stated to be a Class 8 student in a school, was found in a critical half-burnt condition by local residents. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and then shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla. She was declared dead by doctors there.
While the girl was suspected to have attempted self-immolation by dousing herself with petrol and setting on fire, the exact cause would be ascertained only after a thorough probe.
