Carpets can make a home feel incredibly cosy, but there is nothing worse than accidentally spilling something and getting an unsightly stain on your floor. I recently accidentally spilled a cup of tea all over my bedroom carpet, and although I quickly to cleaned it up, there has been a brown mark lingering in the fabric.
It still remained there no matter how much product I poured on it or how much time I spent scrubbing at it, but it turns out there is a really simple way to get rid of even the worst of stains. After desperately looking online, I came across an old-fashioned remedy that suggested putting white vinegar on it.
I was initially sceptical, but I already had some white vinegar in my kitchen so decided to try it out - and in only five minutes I was astonished by how well it worked.
Tea stains are difficult to remove due to tannins, a highly pigmented substance that binds itself to a surface and is resistant to water so most cleaning products will not get rid of it.
These stains also tend to be tricky as tea is very hot, and when spilled the heat will cause it to bond quickly causing the stains to become deeply entrenched into the fabric fibres.
However, white vinegar is very acidic and can break down any compounds like tannins and help loosen any other organic material in the stain.
This helps loosen the stain which makes it much easier to scrub away, so you will make a clean carpet in only a matter of minutes.

All I did was take a bottle of white vinegar from my kitchen and pour a small amount of the solution on the stain. I then left the white vinegar alone for two minutes to give it time to break down the stain, and then when the time was up I used a hard-bristled brush to scrub the stain for roughly 10 seconds.
Most of the stain had instantly vanished. I then took a little salt and sprinkled it onto any remaining parts of the stain, waited two minutes and then vacuumed.
After doing a little more research, I discovered that salt is fantastic to combine with white vinegar, as it increases its cleaning power. It is an abrasive substance, which means it is gritty enough to scrub away tough stains, which also helps easily remove them.
When I was done vacuuming, my carpet looked completely clean again and I was really happy how easy and effective this cleaning method was.
Not only should white vinegar and salt get rid of tea stains, but it should also work on wine, coffee, sugary drinks or any spilled food on your carpet as well.
