A "dangerous" and "predatory" 24-year-old man has been found guilty of sexually abusing a primary school-aged child by luring his victim in with chocolate before his abuse. Teesside Crown Court heard how Kane Povey had caused his young victims "untold struggles in their day-to-day life" with one parent describing his abuse as "disgusting" after hearing the scale and details of his sickening actions.

Povey from Stockton had no previous convictions and pleaded guilty to rape of a child and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Since being remanded in prison, the 24-year-old has grown his hair long and used it to cover his face as he heard evidence via video link from Holme House prison. While in the virtual dock, Povey heard from the victim's mother, who said: "You are a sex offender through and through.

"Because of what you did, my child has nightmares. You've taken their innocence away. They will have to live with what you did forever. No prison sentence will be long enough."

The defence told the court that Povey "functions below his chronological age" and that he "is a young man who's firmly planted his head in the sand".

Handing Povey a 12-year extended sentence, of up to 11 years in prison and one year on licence, the judge told the abuser: "It is clear to me that there are real limitations on your development and impulse control. You have a sexual attraction to children."

As the sentence was announced, Teesside Live reported the victim's mother breaking down in tears. At the same time, the judge also imposed a restraining order prohibiting the paedophile from contacting the victim and their family.

After the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Allan from Cleveland Police's POLIT (Paedophile Online Investigation Team) said: "Firstly, I'd like to acknowledge the bravery of this young child for coming forward and having their voice heard and believed.

"In doing so, it allowed police to take immediate action to safeguard them and protect other children from Povey.

"Povey isa dangerous and predatory man who has caused this child untold struggles in their day-to-day life, but the child and their family have shown incredible bravery throughout the police and court process.

"I hope today's result will bring a degree of comfort to them all, and I wish them all the best in going forward."
