Emmerdale star Ryan Hawley has hinted at trouble ahead for his character Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller), following the dramatic arrival of Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill). Kev recently made his first appearance in the ITV soap, introduced as Robert's ex-husband. The two met and formed a bond while in prison, where Kev saved Robert from repeated violent attacks. When he was out on day release, Kev visited Robert and revealed his illness is terminal. But the bigger shock came later, when Kev announced he was being permanently released from prison and moving into the village.
This will no doubt put a spanner in the works for Aaron and Robert, who have recently rekindled their relationship. Speaking to Express Online and other press about the challenges ahead for the couple, Ryan said: "It's a completely different obstacle to anything else that the couple have had. Kev is a really big obstacle in the sense that he's very a loveable, damaged, broken character, you feel sorry for him as well as like him."
The soap star continued: "He's funny. It's great having Chris, he's been brilliant. It's an interesting dynamic. It's something we haven't seen before. We had Emily Head, Rebecca White, very different. There's been John recently but Kev's a very different dynamic."
Discussing the complex connection between Robert and Kev, Chris confirmed that the relationship is far from straightforward, largely because his character is "unhinged".
The former EastEnders actor explained: "Their relationship is very complicated because Kev is unhinged. But there's genuine feelings there, but they're not quite what they should be."
Despite the presence of real emotion, Ryan hinted that Robert's feelings for Kev and Aaron are not on the same level.
Ryan said: "He loves Robert and there's a complicated relationship. They both love each other, but to what degree does Robert love Kev and what degree does he love Aaron?
"I think it's unclear at this stage what his feelings are. There's this guy that turns up and says he's his husband but Robert is actively trying to pursue Aaron, so it's kind of the dilemma," he explained.
However, there's no doubt that Aaron and Robert have reason to be concerned, as Ryan described Kev as "dangerous and volatile". Chris echoed the sentiment, calling his character "incredibly dangerous".
"Kev is a really complex character. There's so much to him and he's not just some baddie," Ryan noted, while Chris added: "He's a criminal and he's got psychopathic tendencies."
Next week, Aaron is thrown into emotional chaos when he witnesses Robert and Kev sharing a kiss.
Teasing the fallout, Ryan said: "It's going to be explosive. Aaron thinks that he and Robert are on the path that they both intended to be on and that all the drama is behind them. Out of nowhere there's this guy that turns up and then he sees them kissing. It's a lot for Aaron to take in."
Chris went on by summing up Kev's impact as an "unhinged spanner in the works".
