Europe's most underrated capital city with 27C heat that's perfect for May holiday

Spring sunshine and has firmly arrived throughout Europe, making it the perfect time for a city break in the continent. Thanks to the beauty of nature in full bloom, pleasant weather and fewer crowds, it could even be said that spring is the best season of all for travel, but where to?

Fortunately listed their top 20 best escapes this spring with Zagreb declared by the publication as being " most underrated city". Zagreb is a charming city that's the largest in and found along the Sava river and is filled with iconic landmarks, interesting history and vibrant street life. The capital city of Croatia is also filled to the brim with winding streets, distinguished by its 18th and 19th-century Austro-Hungarian architecture, and is said to be the ideal city for a good stroll, among many others.

The city is home to unique attractions and a lively atmosphere with serene lakes and winding trails each direction you look.

The Telegraph wrote of the Croatian city: "Zagreb may well be Europe's most underrated capital. Its bars, restaurants and markets have a cool appeal, and spring makes itself known in spaces like the vast Park Maksimir."

That's thanks to its compact and walkable city centre with Upper Town being among the best and is home to numerous parks and green spaces which encourages exploration.

In fact, exploring and Zagreb go hand-in-hand as the city is the heart of contemporary Croatia's culture.

One interesting part of Zagreb's culture is the city's funicular which at only 66 metres long, is the shortest in the world.

Although just a novelty item, the funicular was once a method of getting from the lower town (Donji grad) to the upper town (Gornji grad).

Funiculars aside, Zagreb also offers explorers chances to visit the historic Upper Town and iconic St. Mark's Church.

In addition, a visit to the Lotršak Tower or the bustling Dolac Market all providing endless unique experiences.

Zagreb has often been described as being Europe's most exciting destinations and with so much to offer including museums, historical landmarks, public parks, restaurants, riverside walks, street food and galleries.

According to Responsible Travel, temperatures in this region during May means areas are pleasantly uncrowded and could reach temperatures of up to 27C.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: "Quaint little streets and lots to explore including churches and museums. We also thoroughly enjoyed just walking around and soaking up all the beautiful atmosphere here."

Another echoed the praise and said: "Always love my time here. If you come, I recommend spending most of your time in the old upper town as the buildings are really beautiful, there are lots of shops and restaurants, and lots of great tourist sites, including Saint Marks, the museum of broken relationships, the Croatian naïve art museum, the Stonegate, and the cathedral."
