Brighton and Hove has been named the best city in the UK to grow old, according to new research by Confused.com. The coastal city scored highest for Blue Badge parking, healthcare access, and age-friendly amenities, including cafes, green spaces, and accessible toilets. Residents also report high levels of happiness and life satisfaction.
Newcastle upon Tyne ranks second, thanks to excellent GP access and affordable property, while Bournemouth comes third, offering strong community support and a welcoming environment for older adults.
The analysis by Confused.com looked at healthcare access, mobility and transport, everyday amenities such as shops and cafes, green spaces, financial factors including property prices and cost of living, and overall wellbeing.
It also factored in access to care homes, dentists, and GPs, as well as features such as accessible toilets and Blue Badge parking, which are vital for health and mobility in later life.
Tom Vaughan, life insurance expert at Confused.com, said: "Growing old in a city with strong community connections, access to essential services, and safe, age-friendly spaces makes a huge difference to quality of life.
"These rankings also highlight the importance of planning financially for later life to maintain independence and wellbeing."
Other cities rounding out the top five include Stoke-on-Trent and Glasgow, which offer a mix of affordable property, healthcare access, and age-friendly community infrastructure.
The study comes as the UK's older population continues to grow rapidly.
The number of people aged 90 and above has risen by 54% over the past two decades, increasing demand for healthcare, social support, and age-friendly urban planning.
For older adults and their families, the research offers a guide to which cities provide the best combination of services, amenities, and lifestyle opportunities to enjoy later years comfortably.
