Goose named Gary goes viral after being spotted using a zebra crossing

A goose in the town of March, , has stunned locals after it was photographed calmly using a zebra crossing in the busy town centre.

The goose, part of a flock that has lived by the for over 11 years, was seen walking across the street in a safety-conscious manner, halting traffic in the process.

Charlie Bedford, 67, captured the amusing moment after spotting the bird as it headed towards the newly installed zebra crossing on Broad Street.

"I thought, 'Oh no, he'll be run over,' but calm as you like, he went straight to the zebra crossing and stepped out.

"We could not believe it," Bedford told .

The goose, now affectionately dubbed "Gary," caused drivers to stop as it made its way across, oblivious to the attention it attracted.

The image quickly went viral on social media, with locals sharing similar stories about the geese that have become familiar figures in the area. Some residents even claimed to have seen geese using zebra crossings elsewhere in town.

The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) commented on the unusual sight, saying that while birds like seagulls are known to wander into shops, they had "never seen geese do this."

A BTO spokesperson speculated that the geese may have learned that vehicles stop at crossings.

They said: "Many birds are highly intelligent and capable of observing human behaviour, but personally, I've never seen geese do this."

Some locals likened the moment to the famous Beatles Abbey Road album cover, with one person joking, "Liverpool had the Beatles, we've got The Geese."
