England are aiming to become the first team in over a decade to win back-to-back European Championship titles in Switzerland this summer. Sarina Wiegman's side won their first-ever major trophy on home soil three years ago, with the Lionesses entering the tournament as defending champions.
Early hopes of retaining the crown have been dealt a blow, given England have been drawn into the 'Group of Death'. Drawn in a group alongside the holders are France, fellow home nation Wales and the Netherlands - the home nation of Wiegman and the team she won her first Euros title with in 2017. But how much are the stars of the women's team paid and does it stack up against their male counterparts?
England Lionesses' wages compared to men's teamFollowing a campaign to gain equal pay in 2020, the FA announced it would pay both the men and women senior teams the same amount. A statement read: "The FA pays its women's players exactly the same as their male counterparts for representing England, both in terms of match fees and match bonuses. This parity has been in place since January 2020."
It means that both sets of players bank a cool £2,000 per match, but that doesn't mean there aren't discrepancies elsewhere. In 2022, the overall purse for the women's Euros totalled £13.4million, which was a fraction of the prize pot on offer to their male counterparts.

A year earlier at the men's competition, champions Italy bagged around £30m in winner's fees, with the overall purse totalling a whopping £318m instead. What's more, it was reported during the men's 2022 World Cup that a bonus of £460,000 would be on offer to England players if they went all the way - a fee that pales in comparison to the £55,000 bonus the women's team earned for lifting the Euros.
But the cash is unlikely to be the driving force for England this summer, as they chase yet another piece of history. The Lionesses' preparations have been somewhat rocky, with several big-name players, including Mille Bright and Mary Earps, ruling themselves out of selection.
Regardless, star midfielder Georgia Stanway is excited for the upcoming tournament. She said: "It always happens; people come, people go. It's always nice to have fresh faces - when you've got the youngsters especially, you've got the energy, maybe you've got the calmness, they're a little bit apprehensive of what's going to come. I think that's the duty of us to make sure that everybody's comfortable here; everybody's ready. Sometimes it's nice to go out there and play with no fear."
