The man charged with the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students, Bryan Kohberger, has agreed to plead guilty to all charges in a shocking last-minute decision that will save him from the death penalty.
The unexpected decision was disclosed in a letter sent to the heartbroken families of the mass murderer's victims, marking a significant twist in the case that has captivated the nation.
Kohberger, who was previously facing execution for the horrific stabbings, is now anticipated to spend the remainder of his life in prison. It is likely that Kohberger will be handed four consecutive life sentences and forfeit his right to appeal the conviction.
A court hearing is scheduled for July 2. This surprising plea deal emerges just weeks before his trial was due to commence, with jury selection planned for August 4 and opening statements set for August 18.
Kohberger was indicted on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in relation to the murders of flatmates Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle, and Kernodle's boyfriend, Ethan Chapin.
The four victims were fatally stabbed in the girls' off-campus flat on the morning of November 13, 2022.
The family of Goncalves expressed their disagreement with the state allowing Kohberger to plead guilty and evade the death penalty on social media, reports the Mirror US.
"It's true! We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected. We appreciate all your love and support," The Goncalves Family Page posted on Facebook.

Two roommates survived the dreadful ordeal, with one witness claiming to have seen someone in black clothing and a mask near their house on the night of the murders, as revealed in court documents.
The tranquil university community of Moscow was rocked by the harrowing quadruple homicide case which led to an arduous seven-week manhunt for the perpetrator.
In December 2022, the authorities apprehended criminology PhD student Kohberger from Washington State University at his parents' residence in Pennsylvania.
