Newcastle United used just 37 words to confirm that Alexander Isak had finally joined Liverpool after months of negotiations. The blockbuster move was confirmed on Monday night, almost three hours after the deadline had passed. Liverpool were able to complete it after submitting a deal sheet to the Premier League within the required timeframe.
The Magpies are due to receive a transfer fee of £125million, setting a new British record. They rejected an opening bid of £110m earlier in the window and initially said that Isak was not for sale at any price. He responded by going on strike, reportedly telling club chiefs that he would never play for Newcastle again.
The situation came to a head when Isak released a bombshell statement, claiming that Newcastle had 'broken promises' regarding his future. The Magpies later refuted this claim, insisting they had never made any pledges to the Swedish striker.
Liverpool returned to the table with an offer worth £125m in the final hours before the deadline, which was reluctantly accepted. He travelled on Monday morning to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his record-breaking move to Anfield.
Newcastle issued a blunt statement to confirm that Isak had left the club, deciding not to thank the forward for his three years of service.
The statement read: "Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
"The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."
Isak spoke to Liverpool's official website after the deal was confirmed, underlining his desire to win plenty of trophies during his time at Anfield.
"I feel amazing," he said. "It's been a long journey to get here but I'm super happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for.
"It's something I'm proud of and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm just happy it's done and that I can get back to work. I'm looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans and getting back out there.
"I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I'm a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything, yeah."
Isak could make his debut for Liverpool when they face Burnley at Turf Moor after the international break. He will now meet up with his Sweden team-mates for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.
