Prince William may be a future King, but behind-closed-doors he can be just like the rest of us, especially when it comes to his favourite summer snacks. While many may assume the royals eat only the most fancy foods on offer, this is actually far from the truth.
With blistering temperatures baking Britain over the past few days, the royals, like the rest of us, will have surely tried to keep cool. And Prince William may have been doing this by indulging in what has been described by a former royal chef as his favourite summer dessert - ice cream. Former royal chef Darren McGrady, who spent 15 years cooking for the British Royal Family between the 1980s and 1990s, told Heart Bingo that the prince, 43, was always a big ice cream fan.
While William was happy to eat ice cream from the tub as a young boy, with Haagen-Dazs chocolate chip reportedly being his favourite, the royal chefs would also be able to whip up the dessert in just 20 minutes if it was requested.
This was common when William was at Buckingham Palace visiting his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, he claimed.
Darren McGrady told Heart Bingo: "When I worked for the Queen, Prince William loved dark chocolate and asked for chocolate ice cream.
"The Queen would press a button, the page would come, she'd ask for the ice cream, and it triggered a long chain: head chef, pastry chef, silver pantry, glass pantry, linen room. Finally, 20 minutes later, William got his homemade ice cream presented to him."
While he had it homemade at Buckingham Palace, this was not always the case at Kensington Palace, which the chef described as being "much more relaxed".
Mr McGrady said: "At Kensington, it was much more relaxed. William would walk into the kitchen and say, 'Darren, can I have some chocolate ice cream, please?'
"I'd say, "Help yourself." He'd grab Haagen-Dazs chocolate chip, that was his favourite, open it, and sit in the windowsill eating it. It was so much more relaxed over at Kensington."
