LUDHIANA: Police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse protestors opposing the setting up of a biogas plant at Akhara village on Saturday. Villagers have been protesting for over a year, citing health concerns regarding the plant.

Local sources said that, to end the villagers’ protest, a heavy contingent of police was deployed at the village by the authorities. They added that more than 500 police personnel, reportedly brought from outside the Ludhiana Rural police district, were called in to disperse the protestors.

According to reports, police officers asked the protestors, including a number of women, to end their protest, but they did not comply. The reports suggest that after an exchange of words with the police and the raising of slogans against the government, police resorted to mild cane-charge to disperse the crowd.

Local sources stated that police may have detained several farmer leaders before trying to clear the protest site opposite the under-construction biogas plant, where work had been stalled for over a year. They added that police personnel also uprooted the tents and sheds set up by the protestors, leading to anger among the villagers.

A protestor, Sukhjeet Singh, alleged that the police, who arrived early in the morning, detained around fifteen to seventeen villagers, including four to five women, and that their whereabouts are currently unknown. He further alleged that police stopped announcements in the Gurdwara and manhandled people, which he condemned.

The protestor said they had been peacefully protesting for a year on their own land and that the police destroyed their entire shed. He added that the villagers are united and will not allow a biogas factory to be constructed in the village under any circumstances.

SSP Ludhiana Rural, Ankur Gupta, could not be reached for his comments on the matter.
