PUNE: The family members of a brain-dead autorickshaw driver (33) of Dharashiv consented to donate his vital organs, giving new life to four patients, including three in Pune.
The autorickshaw driver suffered from intracranial bleed (bleeding within the skull) and was declared brain-dead at a private hospital in Solapur on March 31. According to Dr Pallavi Mehta, an intensivist at the hospital, the driver's death was caused by accelerated hypertension, which was previously undiagnosed.
Soon after he was declared brain-dead, his wife and mother were counselled to donate his organs. After they consented, his two kidneys, liver and lungs were retrieved and allocated according to the ZTCC guidelines. While his one kidney was allocated to Ashwini Hospital and Research Centre in Solapur, the remaining organs were transported from Solapur to Pune.
"One kidney and liver were allocated to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, while the lungs were allocated to Dr DY Patil Medical College," Aarti Gokhale, coordinator at ZTCC Pune, said.
All the organs reached Pune by green corridor on Wednesday evening, after which they were transplanted into the needy patients. Dr Sachin Palnitkar, gastroenterologist with Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital said, "The liver was transplanted into a 21-year-old woman who was on the waiting list for almost six years. Her condition is stable. The kidney was transplanted into a 22-year-old man, who is also doing well."
A representative of DY Patil Medical College said, "The lungs were transplanted into a 44-year-old man who was admitted at our hospital for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (a rare, progressive illness of the respiratory system)." The second kidney was transplanted into a 43-year-old man at Ashwini Rural Medical College in Solapur. "This was the 25th donation this year under Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee Pune," she said.
She said the family of the autorickshaw driver was receptive to organ donation , having recently witnessed a successful donation process in Pune. "Inspired by this experience, they decided to donate his organs," Gokhale said.
As per ZTCC, 25 organ donations have taken place in 2025 so far in Pune zone, which includes Pune, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon and Ahilyanagar districts.
