Imphal: The Arambai Tenggol (AT), a Meitei socio-cultural group, has endorsed Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi's recent remarks on illegal immigration in the northeast, calling it a strategic threat to India's unity, reports Donald Sairem.
In a statement, AT urged the Centre to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and tighten border security to curb infiltration from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The group blamed the ongoing crisis in Manipur on unchecked immigration, alleging links to forest encroachment, poppy cultivation and separatist activities.
"Moreover, it is crucial to have stricter border fencing measures to prevent illegal immigration and seal any loopholes in the border. This will not only aid in controlling the influx of illegal immigrants but also prevent any further disintegration of India. The central govt must take immediate steps to address this issue and ensure that border security is strengthened to safeguard the nation's interests," AT said.
