Ludhiana: An 11-year-old boy was assaulted brutally with pliers and a knife by his uncle, who had returned from Canada recently, in what police suspect was an act of jealousy over a family property purchase. A family feud erupted ahead of new beginnings.

The incident occurred in the Model Town Extension area, where the accused, Jaswinder Singh, allegedly attacked his nephew Kavnoor Singh at their shared residence. The child, who suffered multiple stab wounds and deep cuts, was admitted to hospital in serious condition and received more than 100 stitches.

Police said the accused resides on the first floor of the home, while the boy and his parents live on the ground floor. On Friday, Jaswinder allegedly called the boy upstairs before launching the attack. Despite the injuries, the child managed to escape and alert his family, who rushed him to hospital. Shortly after the incident, Jaswinder reportedly consumed a poisonous substance in an apparent suicide attempt. He was also hospitalised and is in stable condition currently.

Inspector Balwinder Singh, station house officer (SHP) at Model Town police station, claims that initial investigations suggest the motive may have stemmed from resentment. The victim's father, Gagandeep Singh, a local businessman, had purchased a new house in the same locality recently, with the housewarming scheduled for Saturday. "Jealousy over the new property appears to have driven Jaswinder Singh to commit the act," the inspector said.

Police have lodged a first-information report (FIR) against Jaswinder Singh under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115(2) (causing hurt voluntarily), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). No arrest has been made, so far. Authorities said further investigation was in progress.
