Ludhiana: Two people, including a woman, were killed while her two daughters had a narrow escape after their car plunged into the Sirhind Canal near Daburji Bridge in Ludhiana's Doraha area on Saturday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Rupinder Singh of Janta Nagar, Ludhiana, and his sister-in-law, Palwinder Kaur. According to police, the family was returning from a religious visit when the vehicle veered off the road and fell into the canal.
Eyewitness Hardayal Singh said one of the girls was sitting on the roof of the partially submerged vehicle, while the other was inside. Locals rushed to the scene and managed to rescue both daughters — Harleen Kaur and Hargun Kaur — who then informed them that their mother and uncle were still trapped inside.
Efforts were made to pull the adults from the water. Rupinder Singh was declared dead at the scene, while Palwinder Kaur was found breathing but succumbed later at a private hospital in Doraha.
Assistant sub-inspector Satpal Singh of Doraha police station confirmed the deaths and said the two girls were safe and did not suffer major injuries. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary information suggests the car may have lost control near the bridge, leading to the fatal plunge.
