RAJKOT: For most senior citizens, losing their dentures can be distressing, but it rarely escalates to the point where police are involved to find them! However, in Junagadh, a dentist sought police assistance to locate his 82-year-old grandfather's misplaced dentures, which had caused him significant anxiety after being lost in a rickshaw.

The police responded as if handling a serious crime, quickly tracking down the missing dentures within hours, thanks to Netram, the command and control centre connected to over 285 CCTV cameras installed across the city.

Shivam Kalariya, the dentist, informed the police that his grandfather had taken a rickshaw to a temple but lost his purse somewhere along the way. Inside the purse, besides items worth Rs 35,000, including earbuds and a mobile charger, the most crucial item was his dentures.

Due to his advanced age, the elderly man's memory had also weakened, and he couldn't recall where he had gone after visiting the temple. Kalariya searched the temple but couldn't find the dentures.

As a dentist, Kalariya explained that his grandfather had been using that particular set of dentures for a long time, and they were comfortable for him. Although Kalariya could have made a new set, he was concerned that new dentures might affect his grandfather's jawline or lead to possible infections.

The police understood the urgency of the situation and began reviewing the footage from the city's surveillance cameras. They discovered that the elderly man had taken an autorickshaw from Jhansi Circle and gotten off near ST Circle, after which he took another rickshaw to Panchhatdi. While walking towards Malivada via Diwan Chowk, the footage showed him still holding the purse in his hand—but after that, it disappeared.

The police deduced that the purse was likely lost somewhere near Malivada. They formed a team to inquire at nearby shops, eventually locating the purse at a clock shop. The shop owner informed the police that he didn't recall who had left the purse but had kept it safe in case someone came looking for it.

"I had lost hope of ever finding the purse. I'm so thankful that the police understood the situation and handled it with such care," Kalariya told TOI.

Since 2021-22, when the police installed the CCTV cameras, people have been able to recover various lost items, including mobile phones, cloth bags, documents, watches, and more. The city's 285 cameras are monitored around the clock by a dedicated team of 28 officers.
