It is believed that on this particular day, Lord Rama made his way back to Ayodhya following his victory over the evil king Ravana. Since there were no lights at that time and it was Amavasya also so devotees light lakhs of diyas to welcome Lord Rama, when he came back to Ayodhya and celebrated this day with immense joy and happiness.
