Google rolled out an important design for the YouTube TV app to celebrate the video streaming platform’s 20th anniversary. The latest redesign also expands custom multiview features and will be available to subscribers in the coming weeks. The updated YouTube TV app introduces an improved video player interface and extends its popular multiview capability, which was formerly limited to sports and news, to select non-sports channels. These enhancements are part of a broader suite of the platform’s anniversary updates, which include new features across YouTube Kids and the main YouTube app. The update coincides with YouTube’s report of over 20 million videos uploaded daily to its platform.
What this YouTube TV app redesign means for users
In a blog post describing the change, YouTube explains: “In the next few weeks, YouTube TV members can experiment with building their own multiview with select non-sports content, starting with a small group of popular channels and expanding in the coming months.”
This change will allow users to create personalised split-screen grids of up to four streams for non-sports content.
YouTube TV app is also getting an enhanced video player interface that can group channel info, description, and subscribe buttons on the left, playback controls in the centre, and other options on the right, beneath a streamlined seek bar.
“YouTube TV members can enjoy the zen while also being the life of the party with a 48-hour birthday-themed zen channel,” the company adds.
Apart from this, YouTube users are getting a new voice reply for comments, which is set to arrive later this year.
The platform also gets an Ask Music feature, an AI-powered tool that lets users create a personalised radio station by simply describing their mood or the type of music they want to hear. It’s now available for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscribers.
Premium users can also take advantage of 4x playback speed, perfect for those who like to power through videos quickly.
YouTube has even officially acknowledged a few previously hidden features, such as long-pressing the video player to activate 2x speed, locking the screen to prevent accidental touches, and a sleep timer for nighttime viewing.
In addition, the blog post highlights keyboard shortcuts that many users may not be aware of, along with Song Search, a feature similar to Shazam, which allows users to hum or sing a tune to identify it directly within YouTube.
