Ahead of Jharkhand polls, EC orders removal of acting DGP citing history of complaints in previous elections: Report

The Election Commission of India on Saturday ordered for the removal of acting Jharkhand director general of police (DGP) Anurag Gupta with immediate effect citing history of complaints against him in previous elections, as per media reports.

The state government had appointed Gupta as the DGP earlier this year in July, and transferred his predecessor Ajay Kumar Singh only a year after his appointment. This had prompted Supreme Court 's intervention over the violation of its 2006 judgment mandating a minimum two-year tenure for a state top cop.

Elections in Jharkhand will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20. Counting of votes will be held on November 23.

Horse trading & electoral controversies

The 1990-batch IPS officer has had a controversial career with widespread perceptions of a close relationship with former chief minister Raghubar Das.

This connection gained attention during the alleged horse trading incident linked to the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand in 2016.

A case was filed against Gupta in Ranchi in 2017 at the direction of the Election Commission, related to allegations of horse trading. However, on January 12 of this year, the police submitted a closure report, citing insufficient evidence against him and the other accused.

In April 2022, the Central Administrative Tribunal lifted Gupta's suspension, which had lasted for two years.

The state government reinstated him on May 13, 2022, assigning him the role of Additional Director General (ADG) of training.

In March 2023, he was promoted to Director General (DG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and later received additional responsibilities as DG of the anti-corruption bureau.
