NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh has secured the second position in the ‘Best State’ category at the fifth National Water Awards, organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti . Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday congratulated the people of the state for this achievement, highlighting the government’s efforts in water conservation and management.

The awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Odisha bagged the first prize in the ‘Best State’ category, while Gujarat and Puducherry shared the third spot.

In a post on X, Yogi Adityanath said, "President Droupadi Murmu has awarded Uttar Pradesh the second position in the Best State category and Banda district the Best District (North Zone) award under the 5th National Water Award-2023." He attributed the success to the state's focus on ' Jal Shakti ' under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that it reflects the government's priority on water conservation and active public participation.

The state government issued a statement noting that the award recognised Uttar Pradesh's work in providing tap water to rural households and its water conservation efforts, particularly in Bundelkhand and the Vindhya regions. In 2023, Uttar Pradesh provided tap water connections to over 17,900 villages, setting a record for the fastest implementation of the Har Ghar Nal Se Jal scheme.

Under the leadership of the then Managing director of Jal Nigam (rural) of UP, Dr. Balakar Singh, the state has implemented several measures to improve water management, including constructing over 6,000 check dams and 1,000 ponds for irrigation, as well as rainwater harvesting structures in 31,360 government buildings. Additionally, 27,368 traditional water bodies were restored, and 17,279 Amrit Sarovars were built.

The state has also made progress in wastewater management, with the construction of 133 sewage treatment plants (STPs) to reduce pollution in the Ganga River. As of October 2024, 2.27 crore rural households have been connected with tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission, benefiting over 13 crore people.

Banda district from Uttar Pradesh also received recognition, winning the Best District award for the North Zone. Durga Shakti Nagpal, the former district magistrate of Banda, accepted the award on behalf of the district.

The National Water Awards were instituted in 2018 to promote water conservation in line with the government's vision of a water-sufficient India.
