Indian-origin MAGA supporter Dinesh D’Souza has sparked outrage online after comparing Zohran Mamdani ’s possible mayoral victory in New York City to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In a post on X, the right-wing commentator wrote, “We didn’t see 9/11 coming and when we did it was too late. We’ve seen this guy coming for a while. The result will be no less catastrophic.”
D’Souza’s remark came in response to betting site Polymarket’s latest prediction, which placed Democratic socialist Mamdani as the clear favourite with 92% odds, compared to 8% for Andrew Cuomo.
Internet users were enraged by D’Souza's remarks, calling him a propagandist and a racist. Netizens pointed out the irony of a Christian Indian-origin commentator attacking a Muslim Indian-origin who is aspiring to enter politics — something they said he should be proud of. Many added that D’Souza’s attitude showed how deeply “white privilege” had influenced him.
Here's how the social media grilled D’Souza
Man your posts are getting more and more desperate, like you’re being paid to posts it. You really think if this dude becomes mayor it’ll be worse than 9/11? Dinesh— just like how you speak about Muslims— is how we speak about Indians and Jews. A political election no less catastrophic than 9/11? You’re hyperbolic. Are you drunk off internet fame? If you fight, MAGA will support a white dog over you Every non white should vote for their existence False, we did see 9/11 coming
Mamdani is a 33-year-old state assemblyman of Ugandan-Indian descent, has become a political sensation with his anti-billionaire, pro-worker platform and calls to “tax the rich.” His rise has rattled conservatives and business elites alike, including figures like Elon Musk, who earlier claimed that Mamdani’s name appeared twice on the city’s ballot.
Anti-MAGA supporters said D’Souza’s post shows the rising panic within MAGA circles over the idea of a socialist taking charge of America’s largest city. Andrew Cuomo is running as an independent, while Curtis Sliwa is the Republican contender.
