A shooting during homecoming weekend at Albany State University in Georgia has resulted in one fatality and five injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday night on the university's east campus, prompting a response from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is now leading the investigation.
Interim President Lawrence M. Drake II emphasised the institution's commitment to safety, stating, “As always, the safety and security of our ASU students, faculty and staff are the number one priority of this institution.” A 19-year-old man from Atlanta succumbed to his injuries at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, although authorities have yet to release his name.
The university, which has an enrolment of approximately 6,000 students, is reeling from the violence that disrupted what should have been a celebratory weekend.
In a related incident earlier the same day, a shooting at Tennessee State University also marred homecoming festivities, leaving one dead and nine injured. The chaos erupted as two groups exchanged gunfire near the campus, causing panic among attendees. Metro Nashville Police reported that some of the injured were likely involved in the altercation, while others were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
