The White House on Tuesday confirmed that 104% tariffs on China would go into effect starting April 9, Fox Business reported.
"White House Press Secretary says 104% additional tariffs went into effect at noon eastern time because China has not removed it's retaliation. The 104% additional tariff will be collected starting tomorrow April 9th," Edward Lawrence, Fox Business reporter said.
This comes as US President Donald Trump announced additional 50% tariffs on China after the latter slapped 34% retaliatory tariffs.
"Yesterday, China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation , despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set," he posted on his social media account Truth Social.
"Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he had said.
Trump has already imposed a 10% tariff on nearly all imports into the American market, with additional targeted tariffs of up to 50% on various trading partners set to kick in on Wednesday.
The trade standoff has intensified, particularly with China, which has refused to yield to what it described as “blackmail.” Beijing has vowed to “fight to the end” after Trump threatened to escalate tariffs further—potentially reaching 104%—in retaliation for China’s decision to impose reciprocal duties last week.
