Kolkata, April 24 The ongoing heatwave conditions across South Bengal show no signs of abating, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a heatwave warning for six districts. According to the latest update from the Alipore Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures in Kolkata and surrounding areas remain significantly high, keeping residents grappling with intense heat and humidity.
Heatwave Grips South Bengal DistrictsThe IMD has flagged West Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, and Birbhum as regions under active heatwave conditions. These districts have recorded temperatures at least five degrees Celsius above normal, qualifying as severe heatwave zones under IMD norms.
On Wednesday, Kalaikunda in West Medinipur registered the state’s highest temperature at 44.4°C, while Dumdum in Kolkata reached 40.1°C, adding to the scorching conditions across the region.
Humidity Worsens Heat in KolkataThough moist winds from the Bay of Bengal are entering the region, they lack the necessary conditions to trigger rainfall. Instead, this moisture is accumulating near the surface, trapping heat and intensifying humidity levels. Combined with hot, dry winds from neighboring Jharkhand, this is driving temperatures up across southern Bengal.
As per current forecasts, no rainfall is expected in South Bengal through Friday. A slight dip in temperature may be possible on Saturday, with light to moderate showers anticipated in isolated districts, though significant relief remains unlikely.
North Bengal May Get Some ReliefIn contrast, North Bengal could experience mild respite. The IMD predicts thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall over the next few days in areas like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Kalimpong.
Residents Advised to Take PrecautionsAuthorities are advising residents of heatwave-affected regions to:
-
Stay indoors during peak afternoon hours
-
Keep hydrated and wear light clothing
-
Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
-
Monitor elderly and vulnerable individuals
With no major weather changes expected in the immediate future, South Bengal residents must brace for continued extreme heat and discomfort over the coming days. The IMD continues to monitor evolving patterns and is expected to issue updates as conditions develop.
